The Old Corner-Shop...
The original builders and Owners of this Edwardian 'Australian Federation' (c.1910) building are unknown and unrecorded, and the earliest available photo dates only to the 1960s; however the Architecture says it all; This little place grew from a small two-poster verandahed corner-store to a taller twin-shop; on the left where the Cafe is today, used to be a blacksmith's/Ironmongers, and horses were shoed around the side; Landgate records that the original land has been divided three times already (by 2002).
I feel we are all very glad this place was spared from developer's destruction, and it is now heritage-listed. The last proprietor was my father Benedict , who ran this place as a Corner-Store till 1989. Today, we are proud to present this painstakingly-restored shop as part of the 'Small-is-Good' movement here in Bayswater City. |
